If you’re trying to think of ways to save money this winter, consider installing insulation. If you do need to insulate your home, do you know what kind of insulation you should install? Blanket insulation is one of the most widely used types of insulation, installed for both new construction and retrofit (re-insulation) projects.

Blanket Insulation Installation
One of the most commonly installed types of insulation, blanket insulation comes in the form of batts or rolls. Batt insulation is available in pre-cut panels. Roll insulation comes with and without facing, and continuous rolls can be cut and trimmed to fit the space you need to fill. Batts and rolls are often made of fiberglass but can also be made from mineral (rock and slag) and other materials.
Blanket insulation is typically installed in spaces without many obstructions (pipes, wiring, etc.)—such as unfinished walls (including foundation walls), floors and ceilings. It is fitted between joists, studs and beams and is often used in new construction projects.
Blanket insulation can also be used as acoustical insulation for commercial buildings, as well as thermal insulation for areas inside the home (often in attics).
R-Value
The R-value of fiberglass blanket insulation depends on its thickness. It has an R–value of approximately R-2.9 to R-3.8 per inch of thickness. High-performance fiberglass blanket and batt insulation have R-values between R-3.7 and R-4.3 per inch of thickness.
R-value can be a bit difficult to understand—but you’ll get all the information you need talking to an insulation professional.
