We don’t get a whole lot of snow in Southeastern Virginia—but when we do, everything seems to shut down. We just are not geared toward handling snow. It does, however, present a great opportunity to show why we always talk about air sealing when we do an attic project!
As the pictures below show, air leakage is rampant and has a negative impact on your energy bills. Irregular snow melt patterns are a great indicator of where air is escaping. Here are some of the main culprits:
Static roof vents are designed to allow air to escape from the attic, but when warm air from the house escapes into the attic, it really shows.
Other irregular snow melt patterns may show duct leakage in specific areas, like the above the window.
This picture shows a real problem in the whole attic. Notice how the area over the garage is still covered? Garages are not usually heated and cooled, so you would expect that snow to be there.
This house has had some work done, but it looks like it could use a little work on that front duct!
The next time you get that winter heating bill and it’s a little higher than you thought it should be, maybe you should think about sealing the lid and keeping what you are paying for in the house. Attic sealing is necessary—in fact, air leaks undermine the performance of insulation. So making sure your home is both properly sealed and insulated is important.
Properly insulated homes can use 30 to 50 percent less energy than homes without insulation—but not if air leaks are undermining the insulation’s performance!
